Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) is strengthening intellectual property protection by providing assistance in drafting patent and simple patent applications for lecturers and students. The initiative aims to ensure that research findings and innovations developed by the university community receive legal protection and have the potential to be developed into economically valuable products.
The initiative was carried out through a Patent and Simple Patent Drafting Workshop titled “From Ideas to Patent Drafts: Understanding, Drafting, and Protecting Innovation,” organized by UNU Jogja’s Directorate of Research and Publications at The Forum, 3rd Floor, UNU Jogja, on Tuesday, October 13. The workshop featured Andri Krisna Budi Wibowo, S.T., from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property at Indonesia’s Ministry of Law and Human Rights as the speaker.
Director of Research and Publications at UNU Jogja, Irwan Novianto, said that strengthening intellectual property protection is part of the university’s efforts to build a research and innovation ecosystem. Following the receipt of a grant from a program organized by the Higher Education Data and Information Center (PDDikti), UNU Jogja established an Intellectual Property Center to support the protection and management of research outputs.
From October to December 2026, UNU Jogja is targeting the submission of three to four simple patent applications. This target is expected to serve as an initial step toward increasing the number of research outputs by lecturers and students that receive intellectual property protection.
Through its Intellectual Property Center, UNU Jogja is also preparing training and assistance for its academic community. According to Irwan, preparing patent documents requires specialized knowledge because the process differs significantly from writing scientific articles or research papers.
“This assistance is necessary because preparing patent documents has different characteristics from writing scientific articles or research papers,” he said.
In addition to providing assistance, UNU Jogja’s Directorate of Research and Publications is currently developing a platform to support the management of information to be registered as intellectual property. The system is designed to facilitate the collection of data required for the accreditation process of each unit at UNU Jogja.
“The system is being developed based on our practical needs, particularly during accreditation processes, which require a dedicated platform to compile supporting data so that it can be accessed and tracked more easily,” he said.
Irwan expressed hope that more lecturers and students would understand the importance of intellectual property protection from the research planning stage. Ongoing assistance through the Intellectual Property Center is expected to support simple patent applications while strengthening the culture of innovation and the utilization of research findings.
In his presentation, Andri Krisna Budi Wibowo explained the procedures for applying for simple patents and their application to innovations developed in higher education institutions. He explained that a patent is an exclusive right granted by the state to an inventor for an invention in the field of technology, in accordance with applicable laws and regulations.
“This right provides legal protection for a specified period, including the authority to permit or prohibit others from using the protected invention in accordance with applicable regulations,” he explained.
Andri also explained that patent rights may be transferred to another party, including an institution, in accordance with applicable regulations. Proper management of these rights can create opportunities to utilize research findings and develop inventions into economically valuable products.
“Therefore, if lecturers and students have developed a product, it is entirely possible to transfer the patent rights to the university. This would allow patent costs to be covered through the schemes available to the university. The economic benefits can also be shared,” he explained.
Furthermore, he explained that patent protection generally includes standard patents and simple patents, each with different requirements and protection characteristics. A simple patent may be an option for inventions involving products or processes that meet the requirements stipulated by applicable laws and regulations.
“Before applying for a patent, you need to conduct a search for existing inventions or technologies. This step is important to identify novelty and determine which aspects of the innovation may qualify for patent protection,” he said.
According to Andri, conducting technology searches at an early stage helps researchers direct innovation development more effectively. By identifying existing technologies, researchers can explore development opportunities and avoid unnecessary duplication of research.
