UNU Jogja and INSIMA Hold International Conference, Bringing Together Academics from Asia to Europe

Yogyakarta, Indonesia — The Faculty of Education at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja), in collaboration with the Institute Agama Islam K.H. Sufyan Tsauri Majenang (INSIMA) Cilacap, held an international conference titled “Empowering Islamic Studies and Education: The Intersection of Law, Economics, and AI Technology in the Digital Era” on Monday, September 7.

Held online, the conference brought together academics and practitioners from several countries across Asia and Europe. The speakers included Prof. Muhamed Mansoor from Islamic University of Maldives; Prof. Dr. Muhammad Nabil Makarim from UBD School of Business and Economics, Brunei Darussalam; Associate Professor Dr. Suyatno Ladji from Universiti Sultan Zainal Abidin (UNISZA), Terengganu, Malaysia; Atep Yasin, Ph.D., from Mykolas Romeris University, Vilnius, Lithuania; and Dr. Achmad Nursobah, M.S.I., from IAI An-Nawawi Purworejo, Indonesia.

UNU Jogja Lecturer as Keynote Speaker, Discusses the Role of Artificial Intelligence in Education

Khusnul Harsul Lisan, a lecturer in the English Education Study Program at UNU Jogja, was one of the keynote speakers at the conference. In his presentation, Khusnul discussed the topic “Education in the Age of AI: Why Learning Still Needs Heart.”

He explained that the role of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education is becoming increasingly unavoidable. According to him, the presence of AI in education offers various conveniences through a wide range of tools, particularly in supporting the learning process.

“The role of AI in the learning process is something we cannot avoid. It is here to offer various forms of assistance and convenience. We can see this through the AI tools available around us. In language learning, for example, there is Speech AI. There are also AI tools that can identify learning patterns, among many other applications,” he explained.

Nevertheless, he emphasized that the use of AI, particularly in education, must continue to involve Heart, which stands for Humanity, Ethics, Awareness, Reflection, and Truth.

“Heart is something only humans possess. It is the value that guides and controls the products generated by AI,” he said.

At the end of his session, Khusnul emphasized that AI can only generate information, while humans play the primary role in assessing, verifying, and determining how that information should be used.

UNU Jogja Faculty Members and Students Participate in the Conference

In addition to featuring Khusnul Harsul Lisan as a keynote speaker, the international conference also provided a platform for lecturers and students from the Faculty of Education at UNU Jogja to present their academic works. A total of ten papers were presented, including:
