Yogyakarta, Indonesia — Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja) is strengthening its commitment to inclusive Quranic education through a Quranic recitation review session using sign language. Organized by UNU Jogja’s Center for Population Studies and Family Welfare (Pusdeka) in collaboration with the university’s JQH IAC Student Activity Unit, the event brought together 19 participants from diverse backgrounds.
Participants included university students, teachers from Quranic learning centers (Taman Pendidikan Al-Qur’an or TPQ), Islamic boarding school educators, and members of the public.
The session provided an opportunity to review and reinforce material previously introduced through the Training of Trainers (ToT) program on Quranic Teaching through Sign Language organized by UNU Jogja. It also introduced the method to participants who had not attended the earlier training.
Rindang Farihah, Director of Pusdeka UNU Jogja, explained that the session was part of the follow-up to the ToT program and reflected the university’s efforts to advance disability inclusion, particularly in religious education.
“This activity reflects UNU Jogja’s commitment to addressing disability issues, particularly in religious education. These review sessions are part of a series of activities we regularly organize on campus to strengthen participants’ skills while continuing to promote more inclusive learning,” Rindang said on Friday, October 2.
Looking ahead, the initiative is expected to reach a wider audience, including families with Deaf children. This expansion aims to increase awareness and encourage the use of sign language in Quranic learning at home and in religious education settings.
Rindang hopes that participants will apply the skills they have acquired in their respective communities. Those who have completed the ToT program and met the qualifications to become trainers are also expected to help expand access to sign language-based Quranic education.
“We hope that participants who have completed the training and met the requirements to become trainers will apply their knowledge in their respective communities. The more participants who share these skills and teach others, the greater the contribution to community service, particularly in Quranic learning,” she said.
The session involved two UNU Jogja students who had completed the ToT program and qualified as trainers: Akhyar Sabqi from the Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies Program and Syarifah Nurul Hidayah from the Management Study Program. Both served as trainers and resource persons, guiding participants throughout the review session.
Their involvement provided an opportunity to apply the skills gained through the training while sharing their knowledge directly with the community. Through this experience, the students contributed to developing more accessible Quranic learning for Deaf people.
“UNU Jogja students who have completed the training are involved so they can practice and share the skills they have acquired. This ensures that the outcomes of the training extend beyond the participants themselves and reach the wider community through activities such as these review sessions,” Rindang said.
