UNU Jogja Lecturer’s Research on Arabic and ChatGPT to Be Presented at Southeast Asian Conference

Yogyakarta, Indonesia - Research by Dr. Muhammad Rofiqi, a lecturer in the Interdisciplinary Islamic Studies (SII) Program at Universitas Nahdlatul Ulama Yogyakarta (UNU Jogja), has been selected for presentation at the 6th Southeast Asian Arabic Language Conference. The conference will be held at Sultan Mosque in Singapore on Saturday, November 28, 2026.

The conference, jointly organized by several institutions in Southeast Asia, including Prince of Songkla University, HAYBA Singapore, and IMLA Indonesia, will provide a forum for academics to discuss developments in the Arabic language amid advances in technology, particularly artificial intelligence (AI).

At the international academic forum, Dr. Muhammad Rofiqi will present his research entitled “Vocabulary Selection in the Age of Artificial Intelligence: A Semantic-Pragmatic Study of Vocabulary Appropriateness in Arabic Texts Generated by ChatGPT.”

Dr. Muhammad Rofiqi said his participation in the conference is part of his effort as an academic to contribute to the development and strengthening of the Arabic language amid the growing use of AI in education.

He noted that advances in artificial intelligence technology need to be accompanied by greater attention to language use as an essential part of education and human resource development. According to him, Arabic also holds an important position as a means of communication and as a language closely connected to the intellectual heritage of Islamic scholarship.

He added that his participation as a lecturer at UNU Jogja also represents the implementation of the Three Pillars of Higher Education (Tridharma Perguruan Tinggi), while aligning with UNU Jogja’s vision as an educational institution under the auspices of Nahdlatul Ulama that continues to grow and contribute to education at the global level.

“As academics, UNU Jogja’s participation in the global arena, particularly through this opportunity, is an effort to preserve knowledge through the Arabic language amid the growing presence of AI, especially in education,” he said.

Dean of the Faculty of Dirasah Islamiyyah at UNU Jogja, Hamdi Putra Ahmad, expressed his appreciation for the achievement. He said Dr. Muhammad Rofiqi’s successful selection for the conference reflects the growing recognition of the quality of research produced by lecturers in the SII Program and their increasing opportunities to engage at the international level.

Hamdi added that the faculty continues to encourage lecturers to produce research that is not only academically robust but also contributes to the development of Islamic scholarship at the global level.

“The participation of an SII lecturer from UNU Jogja in this program is a strategic step toward fostering academic dialogue on the Arabic language and artificial intelligence. It also strengthens UNU Jogja’s position as a university actively building cross-border collaborations,” he said.
